Wisdom Teeth Removal: What to Expect

Posted on 10/31/2023 by Oral Solutions NW
Rendering of lower jaw with highlighted wisdom teeth at Oral Solutions NWWisdom teeth removal is also referred to as the extraction of your third molars. These teeth develop as the last set at the back of your teeth and are quite susceptible to many problems, such as impaction, infection, or crowding. Your dental expert will recommend the removal of your wisdom teeth if they are causing any issues.

Initial Consultation

You will first have to schedule a consultation with a dental expert. During your first meeting, a dental expert checks the issue of the wisdom teeth to check whether you are eligible for the procedure. They can also request X-rays or scans to check the position and nature of the wisdom teeth. These images guide them to check whether the wisdom teeth are impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth expose you to oral health issues such as tooth decay or gum diseases and must be removed immediately. Removing wisdom teeth that are growing well without affecting your dental health might not be necessary.

Preparation Process

Before the procedure, your oral surgeon will offer you instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. The preparation process might include fasting for some hours before the procedure. This is essential for complex procedures that require general anesthesia.

Anesthesia

Once an oral surgeon ascertains an issue with your wisdom teeth, they plan to extract such teeth. The process is usually done under local anesthesia, which ensures you don't experience pain or discomfort during the entire process.

Extraction Process

The oral surgeon makes precise incisions on your gum tissues above the wisdom teeth. They can also remove part of the bone that covers your teeth. The tooth can be divided into smaller portions, making the removal process relatively straightforward. Once the oral surgeon is sure all the parts of the tooth are extracted, they close the incision using stitches.
