How to Prepare for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Posted on 6/3/2024 by Oral Solutions NW
A man in dental chair ready for oral surgeryMost oral and maxillofacial issues, such as facial trauma, broken jaw, and cleft palate, require surgical treatment. The surgical procedures aim to repair anomalies and restore oral function. They also help improve your overall aesthetics and prevent further problems from recurring. As such, adequate preparation can ensure a higher success rate, minimize associated risks, and expedite recovery. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for OMS surgery.

Schedule a Medical Evaluation

Before undergoing surgery, your surgeon will conduct several tests to determine your eligibility for the procedure. You also require a thorough medical evaluation to review your health history and detect any underlying issues. Lab testing might include digital X-rays, CT scans, and other examinations.

Know What to Expect

Whether you are scheduled for facial trauma treatment, dental implantation, or reconstructive jaw surgery, it is crucial to know what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. Ask your surgeon about the preoperative diet, sedation options, possible risks, and recovery timeline.

Take Recommended Medications

Some patients might require prophylaxis antibiotics to prevent possible infections after surgery. Inform your surgeon in advance if you are taking any other medications before the procedure to avoid complications. Patients should also refrain from taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs as they can cause more bleeding and bruising during and after surgery.

Refrain from Smoking and Alcohol

Refrain from alcohol and smoking for at least 24-48 hours before the procedure and for another week after surgery. Alcoholic drinks can increase blood pressure, resulting in increased bleeding and delayed recovery.

Eat Light Meals

Eat light meals 24 hours before surgery to reduce the urgent need to use the bathroom. However, drink sufficient fluids to ensure you stay hydrated.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

During the day of surgery, wear light, comfortable clothing. Put on flat shoes and avoid jewelry pieces.
