Why Can't Children Get Dental Implants?

Posted on 11/15/2025 by Oral Solutions NW
A dental assistant discusses why kids are not able to get dental implants the a parent, while the patient sits calmly in a dental chair behind them.As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, I'm often asked about dental implants. While they're a great option for many adults who have lost teeth, they're not always suitable for children. Here's why:

Children's Jaw Bones Are Still Growing

Dental implants are surgically placed in the jawbone. In children, whose jawbones are still growing and developing, the implant can interfere with this growth. This could lead to problems with the alignment of the jaw and teeth, requiring additional procedures in the future.

Children's Immune Systems Are More Sensitive

Children's immune systems are not as mature as adults, making them more susceptible to infections after surgery. While dental implants have a high success rate, there is still a risk of infection, which can be more serious for children.

Children May Not Be Able to Follow Post-Operative Instructions

Dental implant surgery requires careful post-operative care, including maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding certain activities. Young children may not be able to fully understand or follow these instructions, which could jeopardize the success of the implant.

Other Options May Be More Appropriate

For children who have lost teeth due to trauma or disease, there are other options available that may be more suitable. These include dental bridges, partial dentures, and space maintainers. These options can help restore chewing function and aesthetics while allowing the jaw to continue developing properly.

When Can Children Get Dental Implants?

In some cases, dental implants may be an option for children with special needs, such as those who have lost teeth due to cancer treatment. However, this decision should be made on a case-by-case basis with the guidance of a qualified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Generally, it's recommended to wait until a child has stopped growing, typically around 18 years of age, before considering dental implants.

Conclusion

While dental implants are a valuable tool for restoring smiles and improving oral health in adults, they are not suitable for all children. Understanding the reasons why can help parents and children make informed decisions about their dental health.
