Oral Pathology

Woman smiling while at dental officeDetermining the root cause of a particular symptom allows us to streamline your treatment. While Oral Solutions NW specializes in oral surgery, we also offer services involving oral pathology to properly diagnose certain oral diseases and dental problems. Oral pathology methods drastically improve the precision and effectiveness of our surgical and non-surgical procedures.

The Importance of Oral Pathology

Many of our treatments rely on our comprehensive understanding of oral and maxillofacial pathology. Understanding how and why oral diseases occur is the best way to provide appropriate treatments. At our office, oral pathology usually involves a detailed examination of your soft tissues, teeth, jaw, and other bony structures in your face.

A proper diagnosis ensures you receive the care you need, eliminating extraneous and unnecessary procedures. Patients with serious conditions, such as oral cancer, have the most to gain from regular exams that involve oral pathology. However, these exams can also be used to address minor or moderate issues like benign lesions, cysts, and bacterial infections.

Diagnosis of Oral Diseases and Dental Problems

During a consultation appointment, Dr. Jeffrey Crowley will begin with a review of your medical and dental history to help us better understand the current status of your oral health. Next, we will perform a thorough visual and physical exam of your teeth, gums, and other maxillofacial structures. Your examination may include the use of cutting-edge diagnostic tools, such as digital x-rays and CBCT scans.

X-rays and CBCT scans give us an in-depth look and the inner workings of your mouth. CBCT scans are unique in producing a 3D representation of teeth, soft-tissues, and underlying bone. This image is used to examine the relationship between these tissues to determine the true extent of a problem and address the root cause.

The goal of your consultation is to identify the characteristics of suspicious tissues, like abnormal discolorations, lesions, and bumps. In some cases, we may recommend a biopsy to confirm a diagnosis. Once we determine the cause of your symptoms, we can develop a suitable treatment plan.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The surgical procedure we recommend depends on your diagnosis and the severity of your dental disease. As surgical specialists, we primarily treat dental problems that are beyond the point of non-surgical alternatives. Some of our most common surgeries include:
•  Tooth Extractions: A surgical extraction involves removing a tooth before it has completely erupted above the gum tissue. Teeth that get trapped below the gums, also known as impacted teeth, can cause some complications for your smile. In many cases, a surgical extraction can prevent these problems, allowing you to maintain excellent oral health.
•  Hard and Soft Tissue Grafts: A tissue graft may be one of the best ways to reverse the damaged caused by dental diseases. A bone graft may also be a necessary part of implant treatment.
•  Dental Implants: Implant treatment is the industry standard for tooth replacements. During a minor surgery, the implant post is placed underneath the gums and into the jawbone. After it fuses to your bone, the implant is capable of supporting various aesthetically-pleasing and durable restorations.
•  Orthognathic Surgery: Corrective jaw surgery can help you achieve a properly aligned bite to alleviate painful symptoms related to your TMJ, or temporomandibular joint.
