Implant Supported Dentures

Elderly woman enjoying her new smilePeople who have multiple missing teeth have more restoration options than ever before. As oral surgeons, we here at Oral Solutions NW specialize in numerous implant-supported restorations. If you need a full-arch restoration, we may recommend an implant-supported denture to completely rebuild your smile in the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both. An implant-supported denture is a superior alternative to its removable counterpart thanks to several advantages.

What Is an Implant-Supported Denture?

An implant-supported denture, as you may have guessed, is an overdenture that attaches to a series of implants. Dental implants have revolutionized the way we replace missing teeth. Each implant anchors the denture to your jawbone, which keeps the appliance fixed in place and eliminates the many pitfalls of conventional dentures.

Implant-supported dentures are typically made for the lower jaw as conventional dentures are less stable in this region of your mouth. The number of implants you receive depends on your restoration but can range from two up to eight.

There are two major types of implant-supported dentures:
•  Bar-retained: A metal bar underneath the restoration that links the implant posts to your denture and provides additional support. The bar usually has clips or other attachments that keep the denture securely fastened to the metal framework.
•  Ball-retained: Each implant has ball-shaped attachments that fit into sockets underneath the denture.

Other full-arch restorations supported by implants include complete fixed bridges. Even though implant-supported dentures are secure and comfortable, they still need to be removed for cleaning and maintenance. A complete fixed bridge is non-removable and can be treated like your natural teeth.

The Implant Process

The implant process begins with a consultation so we can determine that you are suitable candidate. After we develop an appropriate treatment plan, we can schedule your first surgery.

During your first surgery, Dr. Jeffrey Crowley will place your implants underneath the gum tissue and into the jawbone. Once the implants are in place, the process of osseointegration will begin. Over the next several months, the implants will slowly fuse to your jawbone, forming a bond strong enough to support your denture.

We cannot place your final denture until osseointegration is complete. In the meantime, we may give you a temporary appliance to restore your ability to chew and speak properly. After osseointegration is complete, we can move forward with the rest of your treatment.

During a second minor surgery, we will place your abutments or metal framework. After a second brief healing period, we will place your final denture. We may ask you to schedule a follow-up appointment so we can ensure your restoration fits properly.

Implant-Supported Dentures Vs. Conventional Dentures

Implant-supported dentures have several advantages over conventional dentures, some of which include:
•  Superior Comfort: Conventional dentures rely on your gums rather than implants, which can cause irritation and embarrassing slips while you eat, speak, and smile.
•  Superior Durability: Implant-supported dentures are much more secure and durable thanks to the process of osseointegration.
•  Superior Longevity: Conventional dentures need to be repaired, replaced, or relined much more frequently than implant-supported dentures.
•  Superior Bone Structure: Your implants will provide stimulation to the jawbone and prevent deterioration. Conventional dentures need to be adjusted or relined frequently due to bone and soft tissue atrophy.
